Butterfly sweep

Also called Hook sweep

The basic sweep from butterfly guard. You take an underhook, pull them onto your hook as you fall to your side, and lift that leg to tip them over.

Key steps

  1. Sit up in butterfly guard with an underhook on one side, chest close to them.
  2. Control their other arm at the elbow or sleeve so they can't post it.
  3. Fall to the side of the controlled arm, pulling them onto you.
  4. Elevate with the underhook-side hook, lifting their leg until they tip.
  5. Follow them over and come up on top in side control or mount.

Key details

  • Pull them onto you before you lift; lifting from a distance only pushes them away.
  • Blocking the arm on the side you fall toward stops them posting on it.
