Key steps
- Grab their choking arm with both hands to keep it off your neck.
- Move your upper body toward the same side as the arm that's choking you.
- Clear their hook on that side by pushing their foot off with yours.
- Inch your shoulders down until your upper back lies on the mat next to them.
- Turn into them and come up in their guard or half guard.
Key details
- Don't start moving until your hands are on the choking arm; escaping into a locked choke gets you nowhere.
- Turning in only works once your back is down; try it earlier and they follow you.
- Clear the hook on the side you're moving toward.
