Also called Shrimp to guard

The first side control escape most people learn: build frames, shrimp out to open a gap, and fill it with your knee to rebuild guard.

Key steps

  1. Set your near forearm on their hip and your far forearm against the front of their shoulder.
  2. Give a short bridge toward them so a gap opens between your hips and theirs.
  3. Shrimp your hips back and bring the bottom knee through in front of their hips.
  4. Square up and recover closed or open guard.

Key details

  • Don't try to push them off with the frames; they just stop them coming closer.
  • Keep your elbows tight to your ribs.
  • Your knee has to arrive while they're still adjusting; once they're heavy again, the gap is gone.
