Seated guard

Also called Sitting guard, Sit-up guard

An open guard played from a sitting position, chest up and facing them, rather than flat on your back. Your feet, hands and posture keep distance and let you move into other guards or come up.

Key steps

  1. Sit up with one hand posted behind you and the other hand ready to grip.
  2. Keep your feet active on their hips, knees or shins to control the distance.
  3. Face them square and turn as they circle so they can't get to your side.
  4. Grip a sleeve, collar, wrist or ankle as soon as they reach in.
  5. Move into butterfly, single leg X or a wrestle-up when they commit their weight.

Key details

  • A posted hand gives you base, but a straight arm can be dragged, so keep it light.
  • Lying back too early takes away your wrestle-up options.
  • Facing them square stops them walking around your legs to pass.
