Old school sweep

A classic half guard sweep. You come up on the underhook, reach through to grab their far ankle, and drive into them so they roll over the leg you have trapped.

Key steps

  1. Win the underhook on the side of their trapped leg and come up to your side.
  2. Reach your other hand through and grab the ankle of their free leg.
  3. Keep their near leg trapped between yours so they can't step it out.
  4. Drive forward with your underhook shoulder while you pull the ankle toward you.
  5. Come up on top as they roll over the trapped leg, keeping the ankle until you're settled.

Key details

  • Holding the far ankle takes away their post, so letting it go early lets them base out.
  • Driving from flat on your back has no power, so get onto your side or knees first.
  • If they whizzer hard to stop the drive, the same position opens the back take.
