An open guard sweep for when they stand over you. With one ankle held and your feet set on their hip and behind their other leg, you tip them onto their back.

Key steps

  1. Grab behind one of their ankles from open guard and pull it toward you.
  2. Set the sole of your foot on their hip on the side of the held ankle.
  3. Wrap your other foot behind their second leg, low at the ankle or up at the knee.
  4. Drive their hip back with your foot as your hand draws the ankle in, keeping the hooked leg stuck.
  5. Follow them up as they land, standing or settling on top before they recover.

Key details

  • Their only way to save their balance is a step back, and the hook is there to block it.
  • Letting go of the ankle early gives them time to step out of the sweep.
