Fireman's carry

Also called Kata guruma

A takedown that loads one arm and the same-side leg across your upper back, then tips them over you to the mat. A grip on the arm above the elbow sets it up.

Key steps

  1. Hold their arm just above the elbow and draw it down across your chest.
  2. Bend your knees deeply, bring your lead knee between their feet, and fit your head into the pocket under that arm.
  3. Thread your free arm between their legs and hug the thigh on the arm side.
  4. Rotate toward the trapped arm, dragging it toward the mat while your other arm hoists the thigh, and tip them across your back.
  5. Follow them over and come up on top in side control, still holding the arm.

Key details

  • Getting your head under their armpit puts their weight on your shoulders, not your neck.
  • Keep pulling the arm until they land; that pull is what stops them from bracing and sitting on top of you.
