Guard pull
Also called Pulling guard
Taking the match to the ground by gripping them and sitting into your guard instead of throwing. Grips come first, so you land in guard, not flat on your back.

Key steps
- Get two solid grips first, such as collar and sleeve or a two-on-one.
- Place one foot on their hip or inside their thigh to control the distance.
- Lower your hips to the mat next to your standing foot, using your grips to keep them from stepping away.
- Land in your guard and pull them in to attack before they can posture.
Key details
- Grips make it a guard pull; drop without them and they're free to start passing.
- Sitting close to them keeps your guard tight; sitting far away gives them room to walk around your legs.
- The foot on their hip acts as a brake while you land, so they can't charge straight into a pass.
