Front headlock

A position in front of a bent-over or turtled opponent, your chest on their head and an arm around their neck. It sets up chokes and go-behinds.

Key steps

  1. Snap their head down and sprawl your hips back away from their legs.
  2. Wrap one arm around their head so your forearm sits under their chin.
  3. Control their other arm at the triceps or wrist so they can't post on it.
  4. Lean your upper body over their head so your weight presses them toward the mat.
  5. Circle toward their side as they try to lift their head and come up.

Key details

  • Keep your hips back; if they reach your legs, they can shoot a takedown.
  • A loose wrap lets them pull their head out, so keep the arm snug to the neck.
  • With your weight over their head, they stay bent and can't build up to their feet.
