Koshi guruma

Also called Hip wheel

A hip throw where your arm goes around the back of their neck rather than their waist, as in o goshi. Your hips enter so deep that they rotate over you like a wheel.

Key steps

  1. Lift and pull their sleeve or wrist so their weight comes up onto the front of their feet.
  2. Step through further than for o goshi, so your hip clears the far side of theirs and your back meets their chest.
  3. Circle your free arm behind their neck and keep their head snug against you.
  4. Bend your knees, then straighten and turn to wheel them over your hip.
  5. Keep the sleeve as they land and stay up on your feet beside them, ready to pin.

Key details

  • Getting your hip fully past theirs gives the wheel; a shallow hip turns it into a headlock struggle.
  • Driving with your legs, not your neck grip, keeps the throw smooth and controlled.
