Guard PassFundamentalGiNo-Gi

Toreando pass

Also called Bullfighter pass, Toreando

A standing pass where you grip their knees or pants, drive their legs over to one side, and run around them on the other. Speed and angle beat the guard here, not pressure.

Key steps

  1. Stand up out of their reach and grip both of their knees or pant legs.
  2. Push their knees down to the mat and to one side, pinning them together.
  3. Circle around the other side of their legs, staying low with your hips back.
  4. Drop your chest onto them and pin their hips before they can turn back in.
  5. Hold their hips down and settle in side control or knee on belly.

Key details

  • Pushing their legs down as well as sideways stops them from spinning their feet back in front of you.
  • If your hips drift near their feet, they can hook your leg or plant a foot on your hip.
  • Moving fast to the side matters more than pushing hard; a slow toreando gives them time to recover.
