Single wing choke

Also called Kata ha jime

A Gi choke from the back where one of their arms gets lifted out of the way. Your collar grip works the front of the neck while your other arm, threaded behind their head, presses from behind.

Key steps

  1. Take a deep collar grip across their neck with your top hand, thumb inside.
  2. Scoop your other arm up through their armpit on that side so their arm is raised above their shoulder.
  3. Keep their arm raised as that hand travels around behind their head.
  4. Close it from both sides at once, pulling with the collar grip and pushing their head away with the rear arm.

Key details

  • Their raised arm is the whole point; keep it above shoulder height or it comes back to strip your grip.
  • Lock in the collar grip before you thread the second arm.
