Also called Advancing foot sweep

A judo foot sweep timed to their step. You sweep their advancing foot sideways just before their weight lands on it, and pull them down over it.

Key steps

  1. Grip sleeve and collar, or wrist and collar tie in No-Gi, and move with them so they step toward you.
  2. Time your sweep for the moment their stepping foot is about to take weight.
  3. Sweep that foot sideways with the sole of your foot, low along the mat.
  4. Pull their upper body down in the direction of the sweep so they fall to the side.

Key details

  • Once their weight has settled, the foot is planted and won't move, so the sweep has to reach it just before it takes weight.
  • Using the sole of your foot, not the toes, keeps the sweep low and the contact clean.
