Kouchi gari

Also called Ko uchi gari, Minor inner reap

A judo foot sweep where you reap their heel from the inside, under their body. It's a small, fast throw that also sets up larger ones.

Key steps

  1. Grip sleeve and collar, or wrist and collar tie in No-Gi, and move them so they step toward you with one foot.
  2. Reach in under them and cup the back of their heel with the bottom of your foot, keeping it close to the mat.
  3. Slide their foot out ahead of them, the way it's pointing, as your hands push their shoulders back.
  4. Keep your grips so they fall back and you stay balanced on your feet.

Key details

  • Catch the foot just as it's taking their weight; a moment later it's planted and won't move.
  • Skim the mat with your foot; a sweep that rises lets them pick the foot up and step over it.
